Remedial Massage Therapy
Remedial Massage Therapy is "the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management."
The following services are offered:
REMEDIAL MASSAGE THERAPY (THERAPEUTIC)
The initial appointment for a therapeutic massage treatment will be 60 minutes. It will include an orthopedic physical assessment for the condition or the area of major complaint. Please make sure to wear comfortable clothing as it may include, but not limited to:
Orthopedic Physical Test: Can include a wide array of test for flexibility and/or strength tests to help better understand the source of the condition and/or major complaint. Example: Range of Motion (Passive, Active and/or Resisted).
Once the assessment is complete, I will be able to create a tailored treatment plan for your needs. It will include progressive remedial exercises (stretches and strengthening techniques) to help meet your goals.
A few of many conditions I can assist you with:
Headaches (Tension & Migraine)
Postural Dysfunction Ex: Pes Planus, Patellofemoral Syndrome, Scoliosis-Functional and Structural
Joint Dysfunction Ex: Hypermobility/Hypomobility, TMJD
Overuse injuries Ex: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendinitis, Bursitis, Frozen Shoulder
Assist in the rehabilitation process pre/post surgery Ex: Hip/Shoulder/Knee replacement
Conditions related to Central Nervous System Ex: Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons
It is important to be aware that some conditions may be resolved with therapeutic massage while for others, it can be a useful tool to help manage the symptoms to maintain a quality of life. All of which will be discussed during the initial assessment.
The Swedish massage techniques used will help to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which is sometimes called the rest and digest system. The movements are slower and lighter pressure is used compared to therapeutic massages.
Relaxation massage is also known to help improve circulation, lower heart rate and decrease overall effects of stress on the body which can help muscles relax and increase in flexibility. It can also help reduce stress hormones in the body to help create an overall sense of ease and well-being, including uplifting ones mood.
This is a great option if this is your first time trying massage or if you need to take a moment in the day to relax and disconnect from the busy-ness around you. Many clients fall asleep and for me, that is a compliment!
PRE/POST NATAL MASSAGE
Pregnancy will create many beautiful changes in a women's body as it has a natural ability to adapt. With those changes, you may experience some pain and discomfort. Massage Therapy is a wonderful way to help you maintain a healthy and balanced body before, during and after pregnancy.
It is important to be mindful that one of the major changes in your body will be the release of relaxin. This hormone will affect the collagen composition in the joint capsules, ligaments and fascia to allow greater elasticity. This helps your body prepare for the delivery of the little one however during this time, it also means that your joint will experience more laxity and therefor decrease stability. For this reason, I will not be able to use certain techniques as it would not be safe for your body.
Please note I require that you receive verbal approval from your doctor for massage therapy during your pregnancy, and also after labour. Your body will continually go through changes and it is important that we keep your health and well-being as a priority. Before each massage therapy treatment, I will do a review of your pregnancy to make sure it is safe for us to move forward with the session. If I believe it to be unsafe to provide a treatment on the day, please know there will be no cost to you.
